September 25 2014, Brussels – Today, the French government outlined new legislation (1) to introduce standardised packaging for cigarettes following Ireland (2) and the UK’s recent initiatives (3). If the bill is adopted, France will be taking a major step forward to protect its citizens against a habit that kills around 73,000 people every year in France (4) and 700,000 in the European Union - equivalent to the population of cities like Seville or Frankfurt.

The European Commission (Directorate General of Taxation and Customs Union (DG TAXUD)) published on its website a draft study on the measuring and reducing of administrative costs for economic operators and tax authorities and obtaining, in parallel, a higher level of compliance and security in imposing excise duties on tobacco products (RAMBOLL report). EPHA takes the opportunity to put forward recommendations on tobacco taxation.

Brussels, 14 March 2014 — Today the Council endorsed the new EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) reached with the European Parliament last December. After more than three years of delays and policy making, today’s decision delivers to people living in Europe a tobacco regulation better able to protect us from misleading marketing.
